Autumn Term 2024

We have had a very exciting half term and learnt lots of new skills.

Drawing Club

In English we have continued to enjoy Drawing Club as the children were so enthused by this approach to writing and drawing in Year R.

We have been amazed by their progress and creative imaginations.

Drawing Club developed into Curious Quests when Professor Klunk left his Magic Mustard Tin portal in our classroom.

The children love receiving messages via the portal in every English lesson.

Professor Klunk sends us skills to learn, which we then send back to him to help the Great Big Story Dream Machine to fill with magnificent writing.

As you can imagine, the children are really motivated to draw and write every day.

We also had the most fun bringing this to life by building our own Great Big Story Dream Machine in class.

Science

Our first science topic was ‘Ourselves and other Animals’. We started by identifying parts of the human body.

We had great fun experimenting with our senses to find out if we could identify smells and tastes using only one sense at a time.

We also looked at the similarities and differences between a wide range of animals and learnt about the characteristics of different groups.

We then used this knowledge to sort animals.

ZooLab

We were very excited when Zoo Lab visited bringing lots of animals for us to see.

This included a frog, a snake and a giant hissing cockroach!

Journey to the moon

We were all very excited to learn about the space explorer Neil Armstrong.

We wrote questions for him and found out lots of information about his achievements.

We then wrote questions to ask our wonderful ex-TA Mrs Burnett about her memories of the moon landing.

In DT we found out about how to join materials in different ways. We then used these skills to make our own rockets

Toys and Materials

We linked this topic to the previous one, via the lovely picture book of Whatever Next by Jill Murphy.

The children chose a toy to bring in from home, which featured in their own stories about zooming off to the moon.

While their toys were visiting school we found out the properties of different materials to describe them.

Then we sorted materials according to different criteria.

Making a waterproof coat

As part of our topic on materials we were given the challenge of making a coat to keep a teddy dry.

First we had to test different materials and then decide which would be best for the coat.

Then we worked together like the Together Twins and made, tested and evaluated the coat.

Christmas

Christmas Technology

In December, we learned lots of strategies of making a mechanism that can move.

We then used our skills to make a range of Christmas-related pictures.

We were amazed of what we achieved!

We had great fun at our Christmas Disco and party!

And finally a big thank you to all the parents who came to Santa's workshops.

Have a great Christmas and a happy New Year!
